DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

PLACEMENT EXAM

All students, including transfer and guest students, who plan to take MAT 0995, 1000, 1050, 1110, 1120, 1500, 1800, or 2010 as their first mathematics course at Wayne State, must take the Mathematics Placement Exam. Results of the examination are used, in conjunction with other measures, such as ACT scores, to determine into which course the student is placed. Students intending to take MAT 0993 need not take the examination.

All students take the same examination, although there is one part that is required only of those students seeking placement into MAT 2010.  Passing at the first level allows entry into MAT 0995, MAT 1000, or MAT 1050.  Passing at the second level allows entry into MAT 1110, 1120, 1500, or 1800.  Passing at the third level allows entry into MAT 2010.

The Mathematics Placement Examination is administered prior to the beginning of each semester.  No placement exams will be given for any semester once classes for that semester have begun.  A student may take the Examination only once during an examination period.  Consult the Testing and Evaluation Office, 698 Student Center (313 577-3400), for the Exam schedule and other information.

Scores on the Mathematics Placement Examination will be honored for only two semesters:  the semester immediately following the exam and the subsequent semester.  For the purpose of counting, there are three semesters: Fall, Winter, and Spring/Summer.

How and What to Study

Students should review thoroughly before taking the exam.    The Mathematics Placement Exam consists of three parts:

Part A: Problems 1-25 are based on Beginning Algebra.  Those wishing to place into MAT 0995, MAT 1000 or 1050 should have this material mastered.  To study, practice taking previous MAT 0993 final exams.

Part B: Problems 26-40 are based on Intermediate Algebra.  Those wishing to place into MAT 1110, 1120, 1500 or 1800 should have this material mastered.  To study, practice taking previous MAT 1050 final exams.  Of course, you should also be able to do the MAT 0993 final exams.

Part C: Problems 41-55 are based on Pre-Calculus.  Those wishing to place into MAT 2010 should have this material mastered.  To study, practice taking previous MAT 1800 final exams.  Of course, you should also be able to do the MAT 0993 and MAT 1050 final exams.
