Lab Management and Problem Report

The instructional computing lab is managed by:

·  Faculty Manager: Prof. Larry Brenton, 1135 FAB, 313-577-3199, brenton@math.wayne.edu

·  System Administrator: Cassandra Daughtery, 1079 FAB, 577-3183, ac9473@math.wayne.edu.

Students who use the lab and find software or hardware problems should report the problems to the lab manager, who in turn should report them to the faculty manager or system administrator.

Lab Rules and Information

  1. No Food or Drink: Eating or drinking in the lab is prohibited.
  2. Lab access: Only students currently enrolled in MAT and STA courses are allowed in the lab. NO ONE IS ALLOWED IN THE LAB ON WEEKENDS OR AT NIGHT AFTER 8:00 pm.
  3. Sign-In and Sign-Out: Signing in and out correctly is crucial to the continued operation of the lab. The Mathematics Department can only justify the expense of maintaining the lab and hiring lab managers by documenting the extent of its use. There are two types of sign-up sheets, one for individual students and another for classes that meet in the lab.
When a student enters the lab, (s)he must write his/her name, student ID, the course(s) (s)he is working on, the date, and time in on a sign-up sheet for individual students. A sample listing of a correct sign-in and sign-out is provided on the first line of each sign-up sheet. The lab manager may ask for a picture ID. When the student has finished his/her lab session, (s)he must sign out by writing the time out on the sign-up sheet. A student who stays in the lab to attend a class session there must sign out just before the class begins. The lab manager will sign in the student as part of the class and sign the student out when the class leaves. A student who stays in the lab after a class session must sign in again on the student sign-up sheet, and of course remember to sign out before leaving.
When a class enters the lab, the lab manager must enter the instructor's name (including a first name or initial to distinguish instructors with the same last name), the course, section number, number of students attending the lab session, the date, and time in on the special sign-up sheet provided for classes. When the class leaves, the lab manager must enter the time out on the sign-up sheet. Any students remaining in the lab after the class session should be reminded to sign in on the student sign-up sheet and sign out before leaving the lab..
  4. Lab Hours: The lab is open during the hours indicated above. Occasionally, a class meeting in the lab may fill the lab, in which case it will be closed to other students during that period. Open hours are posted on the web (http://www.math.wayne.edu/MICL) and can also be checked by calling 313-577-0529.
  5. Software and Hardware Configuration: Under no circumstances should a student alter the software or hardware configuration. Do not install any software. Speak to the lab manager if you have any questions.
  6. Saving Files: You should save files to a floppy disk (drive A:\) or CD of your own. If you need to save a file to the hard disk temporarily, use the folder C:\temp\math, which is deleted regularly.
  7. Turning computer on or off: Never do it! The lab manager is responsible for doing this.
  8. Appropriate Use: The lab is for work related to a math class. The lab manager is at liberty to ask a student to leave if (s)he feels that the student is using the computer inappropriately or not following the rules.

Reserved Lab Hours (Fall 2007)

During the following hours, the lab is reserved for the indicated group. Other people may use the lab provided that (1) they do not disturb the group that made the reservation, (2) there are extra computers not in use by the group, and (3) they sign in and out properly as they would during regular lab hours.
