A conjecture of Paul Baum and Alain Connes relates 
the topological structure of the space of unitary representations of a
group to a blend of group homology for G and representation theory 
for its compact subgroups. I'll attempt to explain the conjecture
and its points of contact with problems in a variety of mathematical
areas.
