Wayne State University is a state-supported urban university having an
enrollment of more than 30,000 students, including more than
10,000 graduate and professional
students. The university is located on a large modern campus in
the heart of
Detroit's Cultural Center, adjacent to the Detroit Institute of
Arts, the main
branch of the Detroit Public Library, the Center for Creative
Studies, and
several other museums and institutes.
Wayne State's Mathematics Department offers broad programs of graduate study leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied mathematics and in statistics. Teaching assistantships, fellowships, and Research Assistantships are available for qualified students. In addition, several applicants may be awarded housing allowances; these provide a partial rent subsidy, usually for residence in modern high-rise apartment complexes on the campus. The Mathematics Department graduate faculty is actively engaged in research in a wide range of areas. Interaction between faculty and graduate students are traditionally informal and an excellent faculty-student ratio helps to insure that our students receive much individual attention and direction. Detroit is the center of one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States. Many large industrial concerns, including the major automobile manufacturers' headquarters and research facilities, are in the Detroit area. Many of our graduate students have obtained positions in Detroit-based industry upon completion of their studies. Graduate Advisors
