Homework Assignments

Objectives and Philosophy

The objective of the course is to understand something about differentiable manifolds.  Topics will include degree theory and transversality.  As much as possible, we will illustrate general concepts with concrete examples.

Class Meetings

The class meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 12:50-1:45pm in 112 STAT, except for official university holidays.  There will be no class on Monday January 21, and on March 10 through March 14.

Prerequisites

In order to take this class, you must have a firm grasp of point-set topology and of abstract algebra.  The courses MAT 5430 and MAT 6500 are sufficient.  If you are unsure about whether this course is appropriate for you, please speak with me.

Text

The required text is Guillemin and Pollack: Differential Topology: ISBN 0132126052. We will cover most of Chapters 1 through 3, and some of Chapter 4 if time permits.

Homework

There will be a significant amount of homework in this course.  Problems will be assigned and collected weekly.  I will grade all of the assignments.  Final grades will be based entirely on homework scores.

Collaboration is encouraged. However, you must write your own solutions.  I do not want to see identical solutions in different handwriting.
