Text Book. Calculus (Early Transcendentals, sixth edition) by J. Stewart, Brooks/Cole Publ., 2007. (ISBN: 0-495-55465-0 or 0-495-01166-5). PLEASE read the text book.

Partial 1: Wed 24/Sep/08. Vectors, about 13 hrs. Sections 12.1 - 12.5, and 13.1 - 13.4. In 12.3, skip direction angles and direction cosines. In 12.4, skip Thm 8 and the "scalar triple product". In 12.5, do not memorize the formula for the "distance from a point to a plane". In 13.2, skip Thm 3. In 13.3, just cover "arc length". Do not cover curvature or the "normal and binormal vectors". In 13.4, skip the "tangential and normal components of acceleration" and "Kepler's Laws".

Partial 2: Wed 15/Oct/08. Partial derivative, about 12 hrs. Sections 14.1, 14.3 - 14.7. In 14.1 use "cross sections", recall planar ellipses and hyperbolas. In 14.4, use differential to approximate the change as in Example 4, skip Definition 7.

Partial 3: Wed 05/Nov/08 (Moved to Mon 10/Nov/08). Multiple integrals, about 13 hrs. Sections 15.1 - 15.8 (review 12.7). Review definition of integral of one variable in Section 5.2. In 15.5 and 15.7, skip "moment of inertia".

Partial 4: Fri 05/Dec/08. Vector Calculus, about 12 hrs. Sections 16.1 - 16.9.

Final Examination: Tue 16/Dec/08, 08:00 - 10:30 a.m. (recall to have a blue book!)

PUTNAM EXAM: The annual Putnam Exam will be help this year on Saturday, 06/Dec/08. This is a nation-wide competition which is open to essentially all undergraduates. There is NO CHARGE to take this examination. The emphasis is on problems which require elementary methods but some originality to be solved. Freshman and sophomores are especially encouraged to enter the competition. A brochure describing the exam will be found outside of 1193 FAB.
Interested students should either attend the organizational meeting which will be Room 1198, FAB (Math Resource Center), Friday 03/Oct/08, 02:00 pm; or contact Robert Bruner, 1193 FAB, 577-2499 before that meeting.
