• Course Objective:
  Properties and graphs of polynomials, rational functions, trigonometric functions, exponentials, and logarithms.
• Textbook:
  A Primer for Calculus, Sixth Edition, Leonard I. Holder, PWS Publishing, Boston, 1993.
• Exams, Quizzes and Homework:
  There are 2 mid-term exams (40%), 1 final exam (35%), and about 7 to 10 quizzes (25%).

  Homework is assigned at the end of each class and should be finished before the next class meeting, but it may not be collected. However, it is required that you do all the homework problems. Typical HW problems or their modifications may be put on the weekly quiz and exams. We spend some time solving HW problems at the beginning of each class; do all the assignments and be prepared with questions before coming to class.

  Makeup exams are not allowed unless you present a documented reason. There are no makeups for the first two missed quizzes. However, your two lowest quiz scores can be dropped.

• Building Your Problem-Solving Skills:
  After each class and before doing homework problems, read the appropriate materials in the textbook and the example problems given in class, and try to solve these example problems by yourself by covering their solution and compare your solution with the solution provided.
• Attendance:
  Attendance is required for all students. If you miss an one-hour lecture, you may have to spend several hours catching up. Statistics have shown that students who often miss classes usually perform poorly.
• Grade Posting and Receiving Final Grade via email:
  One or two days after the final exam, your course grade will be posted using the last 5 digits of your ID or a student-provided 5-digit number. Your course grade, total scores and percentages of your exams and quizzes may also be sent to you via email using your university-provided email address. Receiving your grade via email can also give you a chance to check the accuracy of your scores in my record, which will be used exclusively to compute your course grade. Please let me know if you do not want your grade posted.
• Guaranteed Grades:
  A: 85-100%, B: 75-84%, C: 65-74%, D: 55-64%.
